Cheriton Transcription

In 2012 Strange Cargo launched its three year mission to create new opportunities for people to experience the arts on the streets of Cheriton. Following the success of the Winter Grotto, which involved around 2000 local residents, a new Strange Cargo participatory arts project is just about to make a big impact in Cheriton.

Five groups of local people including the Talk Time group that meet regularly at Cheriton Library, a group of Nepali residents and student groups from Pent Valley, the Harvey Grammar and Folkestone School for Girls, all worked with Strange Cargo to produce a series of large and colourful images that were located throughout August and September on the gable ends of buildings in Cheriton High Street.

The large photographic images were all inspired by paintings of the famous British artist William Hogarth, who is well known for his commentary on the contemporary society of his time. The images each brought Hogarths pictures up to date by representing various aspects of 21st century life and the imaginations of the people involved in making them. Many of the images were taken in familiar local landmarks or buildings.

Local Cheriton businesses offered their support for the public art programme by loaning the gable ends of their buildings as the frames for the artworks.
