Georges House Gallery is delighted to present Observance, an exhibition by Nicola Dove, which will opens on Friday 22 January and will run until the 3rd February 2010.
Observance is a series of long exposure photographic portraits of people from a wide spectrum of faiths in a meditative state of prayer. The work explores whether this internal, spiritual experience can be recorded and communicated to an audience via a photographic medium. The images are accompanied by a soundscape made from recordings of the sitters.
Since 2005, Nicola has approached people across the world to participate in the project including Ela Ghandi (Ghandi’s granddaughter) and Yonah Metzger (Chief Rabbi of Israel) alongside Sikhs, Sufis, Zoroastrians, Shamans, Jedis and others. Sitters were invited into a meditational space to recite a chosen prayer or mantra and photographed, using a cable release, with a fifteen second exposure time while looking directly into the lens.
Nicola's work has recently been exhibited at Pavilion in Leeds, Saint Omer in France, St Martin’s Arts in Birmingham, Dilston Grove in London, and Galleri Image in Denmark.
Observance is curated by Angad Kaur
Observance is supported by Arts Council England, Bayeux Lab, MITES, Religions for Peace, Soho Retouch.
Georges House Gallery is at the top of Folkestone’s Old High Street, CT20 1RL as is open Monday to Saturday, from 10am until 5pm and admission is free.
