BEST ART VINYL 2009 WINNERS

Tuesday, 05 January 10

5th Jan 2010: Art Vinyl today announces the winner of Best Art Vinyl 2009 with the Muse album – ‘The Resistance’ taking first place, Manic Street Preachers’ ‘Journal For Plague Lovers’ coming second and Fever Ray’s self titled album coming third.

The 2009 winners, display a diverse mix of art and design with the Muse album’s intense graphic work from the studios of La Boca, to the striking Jenny Saville painting used to great effect on the Manic Street Preachers’ sleeve to the very detailed illustration work of Martin Ander on the Fever Ray cover.

“With the Best Art Vinyl Award now in it’s fifth year” Andrew Heeps, Art Vinyl’s director comments, “we see the award growing in stature and a great way to celebrate the unsung heroes behind the art and design of some of our favourite bands and artists. This year has been a particular fantastic year for the award as we have seen lots of new talent mixing with some of the heroes of sleeve design such as the Tom Hingston Studio, Farrow Design, Designers Republic, Rankin and Damian Hirst. Some of the sleeves have also required a whole team like the design for Florence and the Machine album who’s credits include Tabitha Denholm, Hugh Frost, Tom Beard and Orlando Weeks for their respective work as Art Director, Layout designer, Photographer and Illustrator just for that one sleeve.

The band Muse join a list of other prestigious winners that include the Fleet Foxes’ self titled album, The Cribs’ Man’s Needs, Woman’s Needs, Whatever, Hard-Fi’s Stars of CCTV and Thom Yorke’s The Eraser in what has been a great year for the vinyl format.

Andrew Heeps goes on to say ‘we’re looking at a year when vinyl sales have increased again by over 30% this year, so while the sales of CDs are loosing their importance the size and the beautiful canvas a vinyl record sleeve produces, is really adding value for the owner when purchasing the actual record

Diane Dever, from Strange Cargo’s Georges House Gallery in Folkestone says, “The exhibition has been very well attended, proving vinyl lovers as well as the general public are appreciative of the beauty and creativity that goes into vinyl art. Visitors to the gallery were extremely keen to take part in the public vote in the run up to Christmas and Folkestone is looking forward to what Best Art Vinyl 2010 will bring!”
