Charivari Day 2008

The sun shone as thousands of cheering spectators lined the streets of the town to watch the 12th Charivari Day parade, as the vibrant 700 strong carnival procession made its colourful and raucous way from the Harbour, up The Old High Street, through the precinct and onto The Leas, Folkestone’s splendid promenade.

Teams of secondary students from Pent Valley, The Folkestone Academy, Brockhill, The Harvey Grammer School, Folkestone School for Girls and The Marsh Academy, who had been working hard for the last few weeks were able to show off their amazing carnival builds, which illustrated Movements in Art such as Surrealism, Cubism, Pop Art, Brit Art, Street Art and Kinetic.

Pupils from Highview School, along with children from Lyminge, Sandgate, Mundella, Castle Hill, St Peter’s, St Augustines, St Eanswythe’s, Brenzett, Stella Maris, Lympne, Cheriton, Park Farm, and Seabrook primary paraded through the town to the beat of the street bands in their colourful ‘walker costumes’, which they made themselves in class with their teachers, who also took part on the day.

The carnival sounds for the procession were provided by five fantastic street bands from across the UK and Europe including The Bollywood Brass Band, Fanfara, The Beatroots, Bloco Floco and the flamboyant Flibustiers, who entertained the crowds with their spectacular antics through the streets and later at the finale stage on The Leas.

The days events were rounded up by a ska and reggae set from Mr Sweety from France and a set from the fabulous Body Machine, who won last year’s Battle of the Bands.

Charivari Day was funded by Interreg III, Shepway District Council, Kent County Council and Arts Council England.
