Strange Cargo is still collecting photographs of people on the streets of Folkestone, Cheriton and Sandgate, so it’s not too late to help create the town’s biggest and most ambitious public artwork yet.
By the end of the year, Strange Cargo aims to have a photograph of each and every street in the town. If chosen, your photos will be enlarged and made into street signs, which will be permanently installed in their corresponding streets, so every street in Folkestone, Cheriton and Sandgate will have its own unique image for all to see. There will also be an remarkable interactive touch screen map of the area at the new Bouverie Place shopping centre, where you will be able to see all the photographs and listen to the intriguing stories behind them. This is the first art project of its kind involving a whole town to create something magical and meaningful to all, so don’t miss your opportunity to get involved and add your long-forgotten family snaps to this incredible pictorial profile of your home town. They can have been taken any time, from last century to last year – even this morning. As long as they have people as their main focus and recognisable streets behind them, Strange Cargo want to borrow them.
So, make sure you are part of it! Get digging under your bed, in your shed, your cupboards and drawers for your personal little photographic gems of life in Folkestone, Cheriton and Sandgate, and send them, with your contact details and a short description and date of each image, to Other People’s Photographs, Strange Cargo, Georges House, 8 The Old High Street, Folkestone CT20 1RL. All photographs will be filed safely with your contact details and will be returned to you once they are scanned. | ‘Identity’ is the main source of inspiration in Martine’s work. She focuses on everyday objects and landscapes. By placing these in a particular context, Martine creates a thought-provoking and fascinating perspective – and in this way she explores how identity is created and influenced by its environment. |
