pimp my bench workshops

For the Bench project groups of under-18s redesigned a traditional park bench to improve how they can be used and to reflect the community they will return to. Students from Littlebourne, Herne Bay, Canterbury and Whitstable (the latter two towns had active dispersal orders in place) created recreational, private, music making and meeting spaces around their benches.

Woodwork and sculptural techniques were needed for such major rebuilds, including making one bench into a useable skate ramp and one into a beach hut!

The benches were placed back in the street where the young people hung out and local people were asked for their opinions. Short films of the benches were created, with artist Laura Wyles. The benches and their films traveled to Liverpool to go on display at The Portrait of a Nation Youth Summit.
