Celebratory Arts
Charivari Day

Carnival is a very important and ingrained part of our shared human heritage. The overwhelming pleasure gained from this collective activity cannot be underestimated. Running annually in Folkestone since 1997, Charivari Day was one of the first calendar projects initiated by Strange Cargo. The thousands of participants who have been involved over the years have grown into a veritable army of supporters for the event, contributing a huge legacy of skills into the local community. A number of people, whose first arts experience was Strange Cargo costume workshops for Charivari in school, have returned to Strange Cargo as adults, either as members of the artist team or as exhibiting practicing artists at Georges House Gallery. Strange Cargo has a good track record of devising, producing and delivering meaningful participatory celebratory events, from large-scale carnival to dramatic winter events. Access, Participation and Excellence
Strange Cargo's ethos of access, participation and excellence underpins all of our projects. Why is participation so important? We believe in an innovative and contemporary approach to participation, and recognise that if people are happy and willing to work with us to make a carnival costume or lantern, and enjoy the experience of taking to the streets, then they are more likely to put their trust in us and explore more challenging creative opportunities.

If you would like to know more about Strange Cargo's celebratory work, or you are interested in a training course to gain the skills to develop your own carnival in your area, please contact us.
